Massive Open Online Courses Are Multiplying at a Rapid Pace - NYTimes.com

Massive Open Online Courses Are Multiplying at a Rapid Pace - NYTimes.com: "IN late September, as workers applied joint compound to new office walls, hoodie-clad colleagues who had just met were working together on deadline. Film editors, code-writing interns and “edX fellows” — grad students and postdocs versed in online education — were translating videotaped lectures into MOOCs, or massive open online courses. As if anyone needed reminding, a row of aqua Post-its gave the dates the courses would “go live.”

The paint is barely dry, yet edX, the nonprofit start-up from Harvard and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, has 370,000 students this fall in its first official courses. That’s nothing. Coursera, founded just last January, has reached more than 1.7 million — growing “faster than Facebook,” boasts Andrew Ng, on leave from Stanford to run his for-profit MOOC provider."

Students looking for massive open online courses, or MOOC’s, have many options, with a growing number of providers and course titles. A handful of Web sites have popped up over the past few months to help students find courses they’re interested in, much as a restaurant-goer might turn to Yelp. Some of the sites let students review the MOOC’s they’ve taken, incorporating their views into the sites’ overall guidance.

One new directory, Course Buffet, was started two months ago by Bruce Bolton, out of his frustration over trying to compare the quality of online resources. The site lists more than 500 courses from various MOOC providers, and each course is assigned a difficulty level (Psychology 100, for example), to help students move from easier to more difficult material. He hopes to turn a profit by selling advertising, such as by sending offers from certification companies to students.

Providers of Free MOOC's Now Charge Employers for Access to Student Data - Technology - The Chronicle of Higher Education

Providers of Free MOOC's Now Charge Employers for Access to Student Data - Technology - The Chronicle of Higher Education: "Providers of free online courses are officially in the headhunting business, bringing in revenue by selling to employers information about high-performing students who might be a good fit for open jobs.

On Tuesday, Coursera, which works with high-profile colleges to provide massive open online courses, or MOOC's, announced its employee-matching service, called Coursera Career Services. Some high-profile tech companies have already signed up—including Facebook and Twitter, according to a post on Coursera's blog, though officials would not disclose how much employers pay for the service. Only students who opt into the service will be included in the system that participating employers see, a detail stressed in an e-mail message that Coursera sent to its nearly two million past or present students on Tuesday."

UMGA Launches MOOC for High School Students

November 27, 2012 — Rising in popularity at a rapid pace, massive open online courses (MOOCs) offer the draw of classes that anyone with an Internet connection can take for free. While MOOCs have existed for a few years as online learning events for techies, the nation has recently seen a rise in the number of colleges and universities offering college-level MOOCs.

Now the University of Miami is poised to start a new trend with the distance-learning tool. The UM Global Academy is launching on November 26 what it bills as the world’s first free MOOC for high school students—a three-week, six-session class that will prepare students for the SAT subject test in biology.

Wellesley College teams up with on-line provider edX - Metro - The Boston Globe

Wellesley College teams up with on-line provider edX - Metro - The Boston Globe: "Classes at liberal arts colleges bring to mind small groups of students bunched around a long wooden table, batting around big ideas with a professor.

That tradition would seem at odds with the new trend in higher education, opening courses to the masses via the Internet. But now a new partnership involving Wellesley College is seeking to bridge these two worlds, in a test of how humanities classes will translate into the growing on-line arena.

EdX, the on-line education provider founded by Harvard University and MIT, plans to announce Tuesday that the women’s school has joined its growing roster, the first liberal arts school to do so.

Anant Agarwal, president of edX and a professor in the electrical engineering and computer science department at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, said the addition of Wellesley College continues the group’s forays into new territory. Last month, edX announced it had teamed up with Bunker Hill and MassBay community colleges to offer online courses in computer science."
